Temperament

Bred as a mountain cattle dog, the Entlebucher breed retains a high level of energy and stamina. Quick-witted and intelligent it is able to size up a situation with lightning speed. Despite its independence as a working breed, the Entlebucher is immensely loyal to the family "pack" and loves nothing better than to be close to its people. This deep attachment to its owners means that the Entlebucher will not do well left to its own devices for long periods of time. Like all dogs they are social animals and are happiest when involved in the family goings-on.

Whilst joyful and receptive to their owners, the breed is territorial and somewhat suspicious of strangers, announcing any intruders (friend and foe) with an impressive deep bark. This makes them competent guard dogs. However, once trust has been established, they are naturally confident and sociable.

The Entlebucher packs a surprising amount of dog into a relatively small package. They also have a strong personality and a growing puppy will at times present quite a challenge to its new owners. For this reason early socialization and training is strongly recommended.

Properly raised we have found them to be gentle, devoted and wonderful companions. We also have two children who have always found them to be excellent playmates.
