Description

The Entlebucher mountain dog, otherwise known as the Entlebucher Sennenhund or cattle dog, is the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds which also include the Bernese, the Greater Swiss and the Appenzeller.

The body is somewhat longer than it is high and the general build is stocky and muscular. The coat is short and displays the typical black, white and tan tri-colouring common to all four breeds of Swiss mountain dog.

The height, measured to the withers is typically between 44 and 50 cm for males and slightly less for females. Weight can vary from 23 to 28 kg depending on build.

The head shape is relatively broad and flat across the top of the skull with a straight, strong muzzle. The ears are triangular and carried forward when alert.

The overall expression is lively and intelligent reflecting the dog's character.

The early Entlebuchers had naturally short tails at birth. This is now a rare occurrence and the majority of dogs today display a naturally long tail or are docked, both of which are acceptable to the Standard.
